IT’S TIME TO
RETHINK THE RECIPE
If you’ve ever felt stressed at the thought of cooking or following a recipe, you’re not alone. At Cookable Kitchen, we know that for many people, typical recipes don’t cut it.
Most cooking resources (classes, cookbooks, websites, etc.) are made in a way that isn’t helpful. They use fancy language. They have lots of artsy pictures, but few that help you learn. They assume you know certain things about cooking, so they don’t include all the steps. They can be hard follow or move too quickly. And there is rarely a way to follow the recipe if you’re a non-reader. In short, most of what you find out there is not accessible. Meaning, it’s made with the “average” (or even highly-skilled) cook in mind. But there are all kinds of cooks in the world. Many don’t even know they can cook yet because they haven’t found something that works for them!
Our goal is to make cooking accessible. This means we think about the different strengths, challenges, and abilities people have. But even more, our goal is to make cooking inclusive. We want people to feel welcome and confident in the kitchen.
MISSION
Our mission is to empower people of all abilities to cook.
VISION
People can eat healthier, become more confident, and find belonging through cooking.
GOALS
We have big dreams!
Our goal is to become the leading resource for inclusive cooking. We plan to develop a full set of tools that use the best knowledge and technology available. We also want to change the way people think about cooking. We want to challenge others and help them make cooking more inclusive, too.
We believe that when you make cooking for everyone, everyone can cook.
HISTORY
In 2013, sisters Kat and Sam became roommates. They cooked together to help Kat work toward her goal of living on her own. They quickly realized that recipes they found online just didn’t work. They left too much information out, and they took too long. Cooking felt really difficult, but it was hard to explain why. Sam started adapting recipes – changing the language, using simpler ingredients, and adding steps that were left out. And guess what? With just a little practice, Kat could cook them. By herself.
After talking with other people who had similar experiences, the idea for Cookable Kitchen was sparked. In 2018 Sam first shared the idea publicly by taking second place at the DMC Assistive Tech Challenge. Inspired by the support, a small team of passionate people joined on to help. Cookable Kitchen was born.
